19 Jan A Beginner’s Guide to Micro Needling!
In the age of homeopathic remedies and natural health solutions, lasers and scalpels are becoming increasingly passé. Instead of injecting chemicals into one’s body to repair a scar or smooth a wrinkle, microneedling uses the body’s own collagen (a extracellular protein which supplies structural support) to get similar — or better — results.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a procedure that involves using a wand-like tool with a group of 0.5- to 2.5-millimeter needles at the tip to create tiny punctures in the skin, causing a healing response to begin. Michelle Sheehan Foster, owner and licensed Skin Care Therapist at Skin Deep Spatique, explains that Microneedling causes the body to respond as it would to any perceived injury: “Everything goes into defense mode.” In this case, the procedure merely facilitates the production of natural collagen, allowing the skin to heal and rejuvenate itself.
The small needles that we use only go to the depth of 1 mm.
How does Microneedling work?
Since Microneedling generates small punctures in the skin, the healing process is much different than it would be for wider surgical wounds. Instead of producing brick-like layers of collagen designed to pull an incision closed, the nearly undetectable needle perforations cause collagen to form in a free-flowing lattice pattern. “It’s kinda like it’s having a party,” Foster says. And unlike thick, scar-causing collagen, the collagen Microneedling produces is what she refers to as a “softer stuffing” for the treated area.
In an article for InStyle, Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Dr. Sheila Nazarian states:
“Your body treats a small wound the same way as a large wound, and sends fibroblasts to create more collagen in the affected area. We are basically tricking your skin into thinking it has been wounded, but as a result, we’re thickening the skin and improving the texture.”
Is Microneedling right for me?
Designed for both the face and body, each Microneedling session is customized to an individual’s specific needs. Microneedling can effectively treat:

How can I make the most of my Microneedling sessions?
Microneedling can improve skin’s overall appearance either on its own or in conjunction with appropriate products. The procedure also significantly increases product penetration and absorption, so it would behoove one to know which skin supplements (such as Hyaluronic Acid) work best with specific treatments. Skin Deep Spatique carries a variety of Dermalogica® products that Foster can recommend to accompany any session and skin type.
Okay, I’m sold. How can I book a Microneedling appointment?
